Benitoite

Benitoite

September 26th
Benitoite.   Steve Perry and I now own the entire remaining inventory of unprocessed Benitoite Gem Mine material from this defunct locality.  Before the Denver Show we processed well over 150 new specimens.  A lot of these were grabbed at the Denver Show but here are 17 that I held back for this update.

We'll have an equally impressive group for the Tucson Show this coming February.

Elbaite - California

Cuprosklodowskite - Congo

Rhodochrosite - Colorado
September 26th
Denver Show Specimens.   This is a mixed group of specimens from all over the place. Several are or were part of the Al Ordway Collection.  Rarities as well as your standard fluorite fare and everything in between.

Chrysoberyl - Madagascar
September 26th
Matrix Specimens of Chrysoberyl.  NEW FIND! Laurent Thomas (Polychrome Minerals) was moving about the Denver Show and was able to track me down to show me specimens from this new find from Tsitondroina, Fianarantsoa, Madagascar.  The matrix for the specimens consists of diopside, pinkish scapolite and taramite. The crystals are found both as singles and as the better known twins.  Scheelite has also been found in the matrix of this material.  Laurent says he hopes to have more of these available in Munich.

Rhodochrosite
September 26th
Azurite from New Mexico.  Dudley Blauwet is always one for surprises and I was happy to find this small hoard of mostly TN sized specimens ofazurite that had been stashed away since the 90's from the Emma mine, Fierro, Grant Co., New Mexico. All have a rosette form.

Wulfenite - Pakistan
September 26th
Wulfenite from Pakistan.  Dudley Blauwet (Mountain Minerals) had one more small stash of wulfenite from the Kharan Mountains in Baluchistan, Pakistan.  These are canary yellow crystals on gossanous matrix.  Dudley had a small group of these at the Tucson Show this past February that I purchased from him then so they are not new per se but they were a part of that very small find and this is the last of them that you'll likely ever see.

Olmiite - South Africa
September 26th
New Olmiite from South Africa -I received a phone call from South African Paul Balayer with news of yet another new find of olmiite.  He says that the digging days for this mineral are at an end and the pieces he had were as good as the mineral can get in terms of single isolated crystals. I picked up many of the TN specimens he had including a couple with a rare xonotlite association.  These have remarkable color change properties switching from a pale beige in sunlight to rich salmon in indoor lighting.  Paul says that he will no longer be digging the olmiite at the mine... The olmiite has striking color change properties between indoor and outdoor lighting. They look horrible in direct sunlight much like rhodochrosite from Sweet Home does but they burst with color under incandescent lighting. I believe some of these are among the finest TN sized specimens olmiite available.

Mimetite & Tsumcorite

Segnitite
September 26th
Mimetite, Tsumcorite & Segnitite from Mexico NEW FIND! Tucson dealer Marcus Origlieri had the entire find of new mimetite specimens associated with segnitite and/or tsumcorite.  The mimetite from this find is easily some of the best ever found at Ojuela! They in fact resemble the Gem Pocket mimetites from Tsumeb in quality and only lack the size to be of equal standing.   Nice new rare stuff from this Mexican classic locality!

Cuprite & Silver - Russia
September 26th
Silver & Cuprite Russia NEW FIND!    There was a buzz around Denver with the new lustrous cuprite specimens with native silver. This is not a new mine but a new pocket was recently uncovered with bright lustrous crystals of cuprite associated with native silver.  I saw three dealers with specimens of these - Exotic minerals of Russia, KARP, and Axinite PM.  Axinite PM had the largest selection so I picked up a group of specimens from them.

Iodargyrite & Azurite
September 26th
Iodargyrite & other silver halides from Broken Hill.    Again Tucson dealer Marcus Origlieri had this interesting group of silver halides from Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia.  Iodargyrite is one of the few minerals that contains the element iodine and these specimens are very rich in this rare species.  Three of these specimens also have miersite a very rare copper and silver bearing halide.  Iodargyrite is light sensitive so it was quite a thrill to see so many of these with the intact yellow color.  You'll likely never see this many of this species again in one place!

Grossular

Demantoid
September 26th
Demantoid & Grossular from Quebec.   The Fenders had a good supply of grossulars and a rarely seen group of demantoid garnets from the Jeffrey Quarry.  I was especially eager to get the two rare pink grossular specimens that they had available.
