Khyber Minerals (Ibrahim Jameel) had some new specimens of valentinite from the classic locality in Bolivia and he also had some amber to gold colored grossulars from Handan Prefecture, Hebei Province, China.  This is the same locality as the one that produced the large brown tabular vesuvianite crystals several years ago.  I bought all ten pieces that he had.

A 6 cm specimen of golden colored grossular.

Scott Werschky of Reno, Nevada continues to obtain very impressive gold specimens.  He had a large group of big nuggets from Australia and quite a few large pieces from Round Mountain, Nevada.  He also had a beast from the Lokel mine about 30 west of Winnemucca, Nevada.

A 25 cm monster of gold on quartz from the Lokel mine. At least a kilo of gold on this thing!!

Two large nuggets from Australia - nice pen holder Scott!

Another good looking chunk of Australia!

Probably the most serious Scott looked all week in Denver...

My sense here at Denver is that the biggest news is the recycling of old collections.  All of the major dealers were focusing attention on their recent aquisitions.  Lots of very good minerals but, alas, priced out of my realm... Seems to be the case a lot these days.  But, if you spend the time you can find some great bargains!  I found some excellent specimens with John Seibel of Tehachepi, California who was selling pieces from a new collection he had recently obtained and they were not priced into the orbit of Pluto.

A 4.5 x 4 cm specimen of deep blue scorodite from Tsumeb. Also it is a former Al McGuinness specimen.

Inky indigo blue crystals of apatite on quartz and albite from the Sapo mine in Brazil.

With Don & Gloria Olson I found a 4.5 cm specimen of galena partially replacing
pyromorphite from Kautenbach mine, Ems, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.

The theme this year for the show was Russian Minerals.  Florida dealer Charlie Sahlman had recently obtained the Russian Collection of John Schneider.  The specimens were not yet for sale but were on display in Charlie's booth.  Some very nice pieces in this collection!

The entire Schnieder collection at a glance.

Two included quartz specimens.

Siderite & pyrite with quartz.

Moving about the show I saw some other interesting pieces.  I was on the hunt for a nice covellite specimen and found one in Gene & Jackie Schlepps booth but the $17,500 price scared me away. Still gorgeous golden hues on sharp crystals.

5 cm specimen of covellite from Butte, Montana.

Australian Dave Rosewall was set up in Isaias Casanova's booth with the last of the fabulous pyromorphite specimens from Rum Jungle.  Dave said the productive zone had been flooded and filled with mud so this last group of specimens is likely it as what was left may have been trashed by the mud and water.  He coaxed Paul Melville into putting some pieces into the mix to fill out a case.  I will have a few of these to offer on the website in the coming days.

The case of Rum Jungle specimens.

The specimens I picked out for the web.

No question that this was a slow show for new specimens and, according to many dealers, a slow show for sales too.  Attendance seemed to be down this year so it would appear that the economic conditions are affecting the shows. The best new thing here were the bustamite specimens from the Kalahari.  I had a chance to see the best specimen from the find with Dan & Diana Weinrich.  It sold straight away to the Smithsonian for quite a tidy sum and one dealer - Marcus Origlieri - had someone buy out his entire room at the main show.  The smile on his face seemed to wrap around his head a time or two. So, though the sales were down they were far from dead.  Some dealers had well priced or interesting material that got sucked up and others collected their Denver dust and will add that to their dust collections.   Regardless, it is always a great time to visit with fellow mineral people.  There is no way to get ever tired of doing that.

I will be back again in 2012 unless I fall off another ladder.  I will next report on new things at the Munich Show at the end of October.  Till then,

Cheers!
