Tucson 2012 Report 3

T he most impressive new thing(s) here in Tucson are the dinosaurs.  Below is a youtube video I shot of the only animated example here at the Hotel Tucson.   It has piped in noise too!  Some caring soul also outfitted the beast with a Pacifico Beer as this is a pretty dry place weather wise...

There are really just a few things that are new to the mineral world here this year.  Most dealers and collectors are focused on the recycling of old collections (collections amassed in the 1940s to 1980s) and the competition among dealers for these treasure troves has intensified over the past few years. But like I said there are new minerals here but you have to seriously hunt them down.   The relatively new site - Haunggangliang Iron mine in Inner Mongolia, A.R., China, is producing many fine specimens of various species.  Lollingite has been reported from this locality.  There is also a new find of chalcopyrite with siderite but no one knows the exact locality as the Chinese are being very protective of it.  Still, several dealers have specimens from the find.

Two specimens of siderite and chalcopyrite from China in the Christophe Gobin's hand.

Doug and Teri Wallace are set up at the Country Inn & Suites.  Lots of good material reasonably priced.

Specimen of stolzite I found in the Wallace's room from Broken Hill, Australia.

Lehigh Minerals - located at the Top Gem warehouse sale off Oracle has a gigantic hoard of borates from Jim and Dawn Minette.  Hundreds of specimens of ulexite, colemantite, borax, and hydroboracite are available at wholesale prices.  At the Hotel Tucson Czech dealer Jarosalv Hyrsl has specimens of the new mineral anorpiment coating orpiment from the Palermo mine in Peru.  I did not select any of these for an update but Jaroslav can be found in room 236 at the Hotel Tucson.

Specimens of anorpiment from Peru in Jaroslav's room.

I paid a visit to Marcus Origlieri's home in Tucson to see what he had to part with and found some very interesting specimens including an insanely rare specimen of matlockite pseudomorphing descloizite from Berg aukus, Grootfontein, Namibia.   Marcus mentioned that this specimen was one of just a handful recovered in the late 1970s and brought to the market by Pala Properties.   Show me another!

12 cm specimen of mattlockite ps after descloizite.

I also found this 8 cm specimen of copper included calcite from Houghton County, Michigan in Marcus' home.

The weather here in Tucson has been INCREDIBLE - this shot was taken January 29th - 76 degrees F and no clouds!!!

A peak in Rick Kennedy's room.  Rick has benitoite, karpatite, caledonite and superb Halaluah Junction Quartz scepters in his room at the Hotel Tucson.

Geofil minerals in room 147 has a new find of elbaite from the Naipa mine in Mozambique. This 25 cm specimen is available for $8500 from them.

I found a rock for my personal collection!  One of the best pink benitoite specimens known from Mina Numero Uno in San Benito County.
Ths specimen has crystals to 0.8 cm across.

Mineral Decor in room 425 at the Hotel Tucson always has the best Indian specimens.  I picked up this 6.5 cm amethyst rose there.  It is
from Karur, Tamilnadu, India.

Chris Lehman of Benton California is selling specimens of a new find of pink, Mn bearing clinozoisite (clinothulite)
associated with fluoritefrom Ditch Creek in Inyo County, California.  The above specimen is 6 cm from top to bottom.

I found this 10 cm specimen of colorless powellite with stilbite from the Nasik district in Maharashtra, India at the Hotel Tucson.

Attendance seems to be the same as last year but many dealers are reporting brisk sales.  Lots of smiling people around here in Tucson...
More to come over the next 12 days.
